Justine Van de Weg examines the concepts, with case studies, of EFT
What is Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT)? It is a tapping process where you tap on the acupuncture meridian points on your body whilst focusing on buried negative unconscious emotions. This tapping assists dissolving the emotions. It does not take away the situation or perceived problem, but enables you to deal with your current situation and various coping techniques by finding the core or rooted emotion. When you were a child, certain situations from the way you are raised by your parents to experiences shape most of your outlook and beliefs about yourself. When you develop into your adult life, if you were not been given the opportunity as a child to deal with emotions, this can have an effect in your adult life.
EFT helps you to calm down whist working toward various solutions and having the energy to take action steps. You all have choice of how you deal with your circumstances. Keeping an open mind and realizing that everything is a continuous process with personal effort strives to achieve results. EFT allows you to empower yourself by taking the technique away whilst using it for your personal development in your home.
Combining Solution focused brief therapy EFT can be used for:
- Pain management such as cramps to back pain.
- Emotional issues such as depression, mood swings, anger.
- Extreme trauma such as self harm, dealing with abuse or addictions.
Case studies of EFT
Pain using EFT
I used EFT for my personal pain. I was born with scoliosis as a child and could never do many exercises as a child. My discs would constantly slip and I would be in constant pain. Due to my spine being out, this put my hips out, which used to make my knee caps slip out their sockets. I was on crutches for 6 months and thought that there had to be some way to handle this pain in a creative way. I learnt how to use EFT and had another collapse of my spine where I was paralysed in my pelvis area. My husband went to call the ambulance to which they said I had to somehow get down to them. I started with the EFT technique - using it every 5/10 minutes. in an hour I could walk and was taken to the doctor for further treatment. I now don't use pain killers - only EFT! What one has to remember is to keep using the technique and understand it is a process. When you are in the flow - transformation occurs.
EFT with children
I was working with children in residential care. They had just been removed from their homes and felt extremely vulnerable. When they would start to scream or shout I would start tapping on myself - which would stop the screaming as they would look at me thinking I was doing something very unusual and ask what I was doing, to which I replied I was calming myself down - would they like to try. The first couple of times they refused until I had built their trust to see how it kept me calm. Some of the younger children loved the fact that we would play games - from 'Simon says' to hide and seek - incorporating EFT and showing there are other ways in dealing with their anger and improving relationships they would like to repair.
